Who is in charge of the
Columbus Circle CSA?
You are. The CSA is member-run. That means members meet the produce truck,
organized veggies and fruits for fellow members, and help distribute produce
each week.
What is required of
members?
Members need to volunteer
at least 4 hours per season, usually by helping to distribute produce each
week.
How often will i get my
produce?
Member come
pick up their produce one day a week.
Why do I have to pay for the entire season before I receive any produce?
Your payment helps the farmer plant his crops for the year. Your support keeps
organic farmers in business, and organic produce accessible to city residents.
How much produce will I get?
The amount of produce you
receive each week will vary, but in general a share will be enough organic
produce for two people. There is a lot of variety from week to week, and things
really change as the growing season progresses. A CSA share is a great options
for people who like lots of variety in their diet and are interested in trying
new foods from time to time. In a sense, members are investing in a farmer, and
will yield a percentage of what he or she grows. In a good year, this can be a
lot of tomatoes. During a bad growing year, you may not receive all the produce
you could hope for.
What
other products are available?
Fruit shares are also available on a weekly basis. Members may also order
weekly or biweekly dairy products like eggs, cheese, and yogurt. Specialty
items like honey, granola, and fresh meat are available three times per season.
How long is the season?
Our season is 20 weeks.
When do I pick up my produce?
The pickup day for the 2008 season is Thursday, from 4-7 pm.
What kinds of vegetables will I receive?
This really varies depending on the time of year, but this year members
received the following:
Early summer: lettuce, salad greens, radishes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini,
beets
Mid-summer: lettuce, salad greens, chard, peppers, potatoes, cucumber,
zucchini, napa cabbage, various greens
Late summer: lettuce, salad green, tomatoes, peppers, bok choy, carrots,
radishes, green beans, potatoes, celery root, squash, arugula
How do I join?
Download the
membership form, print it out, and mail it in with a deposit, or a check
for your full season share.
How can I get more involved in the CSA?
Become a member of the core group, which runs the day-to-day operations of
the CSA. We need your help organizing the group, running the distribution
schedule, and with any number of tasks.
